Sophie Kerr was an American author, journalist, and editor born in Denton, Maryland. Over a career spanning four decades, she published more than a dozen novels and hundreds of short stories, becoming one of the most widely read women writers of her era. Her work appeared regularly in Woman's Home Companion, the Saturday Evening Post, and other leading publications. TEST CORI
A keen observer of American domestic life, Kerr wrote with wit and warmth about marriage, independence, and the changing roles of women in the early twentieth century. Upon her death in 1965, Sophie Kerr left the majority of her estate to Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland — establishing what has become one of the largest undergraduate literary prizes in the United States, the Sophie Kerr Prize, awarded annually to a graduating senior.
